Bijinga - Japanese Courtesan
Images of Beauty and Desire from Japan's Edo Period (1603-1867)
India Ink on champagne parchment
The majority of my work is inspired by original images of Edo Courtesans, namely the passionate art of Kitagawa Utamaro. My interpretations of the iconic beauties reveal a Japanese periodization of articulate, artistic, and exquisite, beauty, albeit, a beauty that plied their sexual services in the Yoshiwara. My fascination with Japanese culture and art of the Edo period has been prevalent since childhood. I have always beheld an intimate intrigue for the poise, grace, and functionary role of the Edo Courtesans. I utilize the precision and rigidity of India ink and calligraphy tips to capture the exoticism and elitism of these rare women. The result: a new, modern collection of bijinga in the form of eclectic, stylized fashion-plates.

Les Ballets Russes
Ballet Fashion Plates
India Ink on champagne parchment
Designer's Ink on pastel paper and crystalline
The inspiration for the development of Les Ballets Russes evolved from a passion and admiration for the synthesized world of dance, as expressed by the orchestral genius of Russian impresario, Sergei Diaghilev's legendary Ballets Russes. The original Les Ballets Russes (1909-1929), was founded upon practice and belief in Gesamtkunstwerk, or integrated works of art. My exploration of line, construct, and design was influenced by a passion for theatre arts design, further cultivated by an admiration of the French and Russian avant-garde movements. In this collected body of work, the viewer experiences the amalgamated forces of dance, choreographer, music, set-design, and costume design. The individual pieces reveal abstract interpretations of signature designs and forms which made Les Ballets Russes world famous.
